As an aspiring marketing guru my time is consumed with social media. I tweet about events I’m going to, local happenings and news articles that strike me as useful. All people who partake in the PR world of marketing use the tool of Twitter to bring across client stories, promote new products and expand their network. It is no secret that Twitter is useful for getting an idea out to your followers. At my current internship my mentor has taught me the benefits of Twitter, and I love using it, but there is one issue that nags and nags at me about this promotional tool:
How does the information you tweet reach those who are not your followers?
Currently the answer is “It can’t.” But have no fear! Things are changing.
This week Microsoft and Google made deals with Evan Williams, Twitter’s CEO. These deals will bring in a possible source of revenue for Twitter. But I see these deals as more than just cash collectors.
Soon Twitter’s constant real-time updates will infiltrate into search engines. PR professionals will no longer be tweeting to just their followers! With tweets showing up on search engine results people who are not a member of the Twitter craze will be able to read new updates.
I am anxious to see how this new technology will work. Google is planning to blend Twitter posts into their main search results. Maybe even more people will join the growing social network due to its increased public appearance.
